Ellwood Cypress

Conifer. False-cypress. Slow growing evergreen tree, can reach 4-8m height in 20-50 years.

Journal
  • Before 14 Dec 2021: Purchased from Home Depot, 28 cm height.
  • Jan-Feb 2022: Has been looking rather dry.
  • 18 Feb: pruned a little bit to remove dead looking tips.
  • 3 Mar: worse. Sacrificed.
Care
  • Plenty of direct sunlight. Without enough sunlight, inner branches often die back. The tree can't produce new buds on old wood, so any brown or bare patches due to lack of light will not grow back.
  • Average, moist, well-drained soil or potting mix.
  • The youngs like moderate amount of water, but dont like wet feet, susceptible to root rot and often fatal. Water well at least once a week especially in dry weather. Once established watering can be reduced
  • Low maintenance, no pruning required unless bonsai trees. For shaping, best to do it on fall. Remove dead limbs, trim back to shape, but don't cut into old wood. Limbs cut back too far will not generate new growth and will create a bare spot. Gentle pruning to remove unattractive brown dead foliage can be done with blasting water from a hose. Enough to remove dead foliage, without worry cuting to deep. For bonsai plant, pinching with hand regularly to shape is a good idea.
  • Doesn't need fertilizer unless the soil is known to be nutrient poor. In such case, use all purpose before new spring growth begin.
  • Root rot and leaf burn is common. Root rot can be prevented with good drainage, leaf burn with sheltering tree from the wind.
