Planted from seeds (Berton Seeds)

Lavender 2021 Journal
  • Spring 2021
    • Planted from seeds from Berton Seeds, I think sometimes in spring 2021.
  • December
    • By the end of December, they never been flowering yet, but they have been well and easy to maintain.
  • January 2022
    • So many plants are dried up early in January. It seems like right now it started growing again. Last night, to many sticks that only has dried leaves, leaves are removed and stick is pruned to about 5 cm. Hopefully this doesn't kill them.
  • February
    • 18: Pinched and cleaned. Pinched off leaves are very fragrant.
    • 20: Spring pruning today. Still too scraggly. Many reference said don't prune more 1/3, however our lavender is very long. They are green but just at the tip. They have long bare stem in between. New growth can be seen along some of the base and along some the stem. Once reference showing major pruning can be done, I decided to do that, since the goal is to make a compact and tidy indoor windowsill lavender. I hope it will grow back and can bloom.
  • March
    • 15: dead plants removed.
    • 25: Watered thoroughly in preparation of 10 days holiday.
  • April
    • 3: Back from holiday, looks good.
  • May
    • 21: Pruned to the base. Repotted with potting mix + sand. The bottom leaves have been turning brown for awhile. climbing up with time. Possible cause, overwatering? Recommendation is to prune to the base.
  • June
    • 7: Still no new growth. Terminated today.
Care
  • Thrive best in warm, well-draining soil and full sun.
  • Full sun
  • Well drained soil in drier side, can be achieved by mix the potting mix with a little bit of sand. Which is the case we have here. Maybe that's why it's been growing well.
  • Alkaline or especially chalky soil enhance the fragrance. pH under 6.5 can cause short life.
  • Regular watering while young, extremely drought-resistance once established.
  • Can stand large range of temperature, but don't like high humidity.
  • A handful of compost is a good idea when first starting, after that feeding is not needed and it can reduce the potency. Has been fertilized regularly using rose formula roughly every 2 week, either using indoor concentration or half outdoor concentration. Last fertilizing: 28 Dec, rose formula. Maybe then better no more.
  • Toxic to dogs and cats
